About

Early Years in Northern Minnesota with 5×7 Camera

My name is David Maki and I am a photographer located in the Pacific Northwest. While I have been a photographer for most of my life, I have only recently focused on it full time.

In high school I began my photographic journey with a standard manual 35mm Minolta. In fact, my future wife and I met because of photography. My first Christmas present to her was a Minolta. I continued to grow my cache of camera equipment. I began collecting old antique cameras and even began shooting with an old 5×7 sheet film camera.

Molly Shooting with that First Christmas Present

As the complexities of life increased, the camera gear began to collect dust. While travels took my wife and I around the world, a series of small point and shoot digital cameras provided the only recorded images.

A safari in South Africa finally stirred that passion for photography. Unfortunately I could no longer distinguish any of my equipment from the old antique cameras in my collection. I invested in Nikon’s mid level entry DSLR model and never looked back. The images from South Africa were spectacular and I was once again hooked. I slowly began to expand my equipment. When I decided to step away from my career as an executive of a manufacturing operation, it was time to recommit to my passion. More about that transition can be found at my blog.

While I do not yet have a specific niche, you can see by more portfolio that I tend to prefer images of wildlife, nature, and travel destinations. Thank-you for visiting and I hope you enjoy the images.
